Mission & Philosophy
National Grid’s community commitment is based on a long tradition of social responsibility and is fundamental to our identity as a good corporate citizen. The National Grid Foundation was created to enhance the quality of life in areas where we provide services. Our ongoing challenge is to create opportunities for solutions to educational and environmental issues. Our Foundation philosophy is based on the principle that giving people the tools to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of individuals, families and communities.
Focus
Through examination as well as research, surveys and interviews with members of our community, we have learned that Education and the Environment are issues of major concern and those which a major energy company should support.


The National Grid Foundation endeavors to improve the quality of life within our grant making area by supporting educational opportunities that assist people of all ages advance their opportunities for self sufficiency. Our educational priorities include:


  • Classroom based education for K-12 students.
  • Innovative Scholarship and University partnerships that support and advance underserved members of our community.
  • Skills training that helps people of all ages to lead more productive lives.

The National Grid Foundation also takes great pride with respect to our commitment to the environment, and we make grants to organizations that share our fervor for environmental stewardship. More specifically, our environmental priorities include:

  • Projects that support the sustainability of our natural resources.
  • Programs & Projects that inspire and educate young people about their connection too and responsibility for the preservation of the environment.
  • Projects that seek to preserve open spaces for future generations.
About the Foundation
National Grid reaffirmed its dedication to our communities with the establishment of the National Grid Foundation in December of 1998 with a $20 million endowment, as an outgrowth of our passion for and commitment to the communities we serve. In September of 2000, National Grid enhanced its commitment with an additional gift of $10 million to the Foundation. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided nearly $12 million in grants to hundreds of non-profit organizations across National Grid's operating area.

The National Grid Foundation is more than a funding source. Through our partnerships, we are afforded the opportunity to work with a host of diverse and remarkable non-profit organizations. Our experience has shown that by working together we can bring about changes that inspire people and transform communities.
Are you eligible for a grant?
Grants are limited to charitable organizations, which at a minimum meet the following criteria:

  • Designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Provides programs and services in the National Grid Foundation service territory.
Grant Restrictions
Grants generally will not be made to:
  • Individuals.
  • Sectarian and religious organizations that do not serve the general public on a non-denominational basis.
  • Organizations requesting funds for capital or endowment campaigns.
  • Organizations requesting funds for advertisements, tables or tickets at dinners or other functions.
  • Political, fraternal, social or other membership organizations providing services mainly to their own constituencies.
  • Organizations whose combined administrative, management and fundraising expenses exceed 30 percent of the organization's total operating budget.
